Kanchanjunga is the third highest mountain in the world. Located in eastern part of Nepal it towers 8586m. Kanchanjunga Circuit Trek takes you to Kanchanjunga Base Camp which is located at an altitude of 5143m.
It is a rewarding trek which offers a chance to see Jannu, Kabaru, Tuplung,Nyukla Lachung and Rathong peaks. The vegetation on the trek is equally beautiful. Rhododendrons, birch, pine and oak are abundant on the way to the base camp.
The literal meaning of kanchanjunga is ‘Five Treasures of Snow’ which refers to the five peaks which the Kanchanjunga consists of. Four out of these five peaks are above 8450m.
Locals of this part of the world are very nice and they are popular for warm hospitality. The site is also famous for Limbu culture and they (Limbu) are the major inhabitants of the area. A local drink called Tongba of this place is very popular among Nepalis. It is hot fermented millet drink prepared locally.
This trekking also requires the special permit as the site is listed under the restricted category. Kanchanjunga was opened for foreigners in 1988. Kanchanjunga Conservation Area protects the entire region where inhabit snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, red panda, musk deer and many other wild beasts.
